About
St. Simons Art Gallery features Mildred Nix Huie, Mildred Huie Wilcox, and several other notable artists. Both women spent their lives enriching Georgia, specifically Coastal Georgia, through art, history, fashion and community leadership. Below, you'll find a short synopsis of their lives written by a friend.
Mildred Nix Huie
In 1906, Mildred Nix Huie was born in Augusta. She grew up in Savannah, raised her family in Albany, and eventually landed in St. Simons Island.
Girl Scouts
While living in Savannah, Mildred joined Juliette Gordon Low's first Girl Scout Troop (1912). Girl Scouts teaches its members to blaze their own trail and leave the world a better place. Low's goal was certainly realized through all of Mildred's many accomplishments.

College, Children, and Beyond
Mildred graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Education, but she also spend time abroad studying art in England and Rome. She wed John Carlton Huie in 1928 and had three children: Mildred (Millie), Carlton, and John. For a short time, Mildred lived in Albany, Georgia where she managed WALB Radio and TV from 1941 to 1953.
Saint Simons Island
In the early 1960s, Mildred and her family landed in Saint Simons Island, where she opened The Left Bank Gallery. This wonderful space was created to feature local, Coastal artists. Additionally, Mildred published a series of illustrated historical books about local plantations along with her daughter.
Mildred's Legacy
Pictured here is Mildred Nix Huie, her daughter Millie, and her life-sized parlor dolls. After Mildred's passing, Millie kept her legacy alive by creating her own art, continuing research on historical plantations, and taking over The Left Bank Gallery. Ultimately, Millie carried on her mother's work with Southern elegance and excellence.
Mildred Huie Wilcox
After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in English Literature, Millie moved to New York and began working at the Fashion House of famed Estonian couturier, Madame Eleanora Garnett.
Time Abroad
Millie eventually moved to Rome, where she modeled many of the fashions she designed in New York. Later, she became involved with the French art scene, meeting renowned artists like Cocteau, Picasso, and Matisse.
Saint Simons Island
Millie moved back to Georgia in 1966, this time to Saint Simons Island with her family. Here, she married Robert Wilcox, a hotelier from France. Both worked tirelessly to expand The Left Bank Art Gallery. The gallery of local art collection was now expanded with hand-selected pieces from the couple's many trips to France.
More Accomplishments
In addition to her work as a model and gallery owner, Mille penned a column in Coastal Illustrated, sat on several boards, and even entertained world leaders at the G8 Summit hosted at Sea Island in 2004.
Mildred Today
Although The Left Bank Gallery closed its doors in 2014, Millie continues to sell art from her home, affectionately named Ferme Saint Simeon after the famed French Impressionist retreat. Millie's paintings, whether curated or her own work, have remarkable stories behind them. Lucky for us, Millie is an equally remarkable storyteller.
